LLANCILLO is a small parish situated on the river Monnow, which here
divides the counties of Hereford and Monmouth. It is distant about 8
miles N.E. of Abergavenny, 15 S.W. of Hereford, and 2 S.W. of Pontrilas
station on the Newport, Abergavenny, and Hereford branch of the Great
Western railway (West Midland section), by which line the parish is
intersected. It is in Ewyas Lacy hundred, Dore union and petty sessional
division, Hereford county court district, and Longtown polling district.
The population in 1861 was 74; in 1871, 88; inhabited houses, 14;
families or separate occupiers, 14; area of parish, 1,085 acres; annual
rateable value, £877 2s. 6d. E. Scudamore Lucas, Esq. (the lord of the
manor), and James Gilbert Price, Esq., are the chief landowners. The
soil is sandy; subsoil red sandstone; products, wheat, barley, roots, oats,
&c. Llancillo is in the diocese and archdeaconry of Hereford and rural
deanery of Weobley; living, a vicarage consolidated with Rowlstone; joint
value, between £200 and £300; patron, Michael King, Esq.; vicar, Rev.
James Martin Kennedy, of King's College, London; who was instituted in
1864, and resides at Rowlstone vicarage. The church (St. Peter's) is a
very ancient structure with nave, chancel, porch, small belfry and one
bell. It is in a bad state of repair and unfit for divine service. The
register commences with the year 1730. There is no school in the parish.
A school board has been formed for the united district of Rowlstone,
Walterstone, and Llancillo, and a new school is about to be erected at
Walterstone.
